Poetry at the Hessler Street Fair
Poetry has always been an integral part of the Hessler Street Fair, sometimes having its own stage on the street and sometimes combining with music on the main stage, but always doing something new. This year we continue to provide space for local poets to speak. There will be Poetry at the Barking Spider on Saturday. Check back for the schedule of events.
Poets may submit up to five original poems for consideration. Poems of less than one page in length are preferred. The contest is open to all poets aged 14 and older. Accompanying all entries must be the author’s name, street address, city, state, zip code, telephone number and email address (if applicable). Please try to keep it relatively clean.
The theme of this year’s fair is “Keep the Vibe Alive”
Entries must be sent via US mail and postmarked no later than April 23, 2008. Poets whose work has been accepted will notified via email, phone or US mail by April 30, 2008. All accepted poems will be included in the annual Hessler Street Fair Poetry Book, which will be available at the Hessler Street Fair Committee booth the weekend of the fair, May 17 and 18, 2008.
Judging of the entries will take place on the evening of Wednesday May 14, 2008 at Mac’s Backs Paperbacks on Coventry. Winners will be declared at that time. In order to win cash prizes, the poet must be present at that time. Prizes will be awarded the night of the readings. In addition, the top three contestants will be able to read their entries live from the stage during the Hessler Street Fair and will be simulcast via WRUW 91.1 FM.
